You Can Make Cinema: 09 - 10

" Between November 2009 to May 2010 a dedicated film promotional campaign aiming to enable larger cinema viewing and participation is underway. Here is what the campaign is about "

You Can Make Cinema is a dedicated film promotional program initiated by Docskool taking place between Novebmer 2009 to May 2010. Designed to extensively promote the ideas of independent film access and development of new forms in cinema, the program takes through a series of activities designed to create mass interests in films from all sectors of the society. Special interests are given to film viewing, participatory film exercises and to showcases of new works.

a.    Something Like a Film Festival 2010
Something like a film festival, will take place between January to May 2010 as an online event of short films. The festival has been designed to encourage sharing of films made in  and out of Nepal and to provide merits to filmmakers that have taken the options of making their first films. The festival will take place more as a film showcase activity with submitted films being screened at various open air locations across Kathmandu during the festival duration. The festival shall promote voting of submitted films and a final selection of films selected forcertain creative aspects. Something like a film festival will act as the crowning event of the campaign also closing it with the end of the festival.   ( a dedicated festival website to be launched in January 2010)

b.    Short Film Factory (Project 2010)
Short Film Factory is a short film promotion label designed by harke films to promote and establish short films as a structure that can boost film interests in amateur or inspiring. Acting as a professional level program, the project 2010 will collide with the campaign activity aggressively promoting the idea of public participation in filmmaking. The film comprising of three short films shall travel 13 destinations in Nepal and four international destinations between April and May 2010. The factory aims at establishing  new systems of short filmmaking by the end of this program.( individuals interested in promoting the film in their local levels or being involved in the activity may contact the production manager of Short Film factory; Project 2010)

c.    Harke- Fellowship
Harke- Fellowship is an ongoing film production program of where selected film enthuse participate to breathe out a professional production on a certain concept. The fellowship takes place every year starting October and shall be inbuilt for 2010 inside the campaign with the final product being released in March 2010. The film made by aspirant film enthuse with none or little film experience is also scheduled to travel various parts of Nepal following its March screening. 


d.    Hotspot Screenings

Hotspot screenings refer to screening of films scheduled in accessible locations inside Kathmandu valley. Starting right after the launch such screenings will be held in six+ public locations  inside Kathmandu where screenings of various films will take place on a regular basis. The core idea here being to promote viewing of films that donot make it to the film screens in Nepal due to certain economic restrains. The campaign looks at organizing as many screenings of this nature as possible and invites interests from any communities where such screening might happen.( Final calendar up by 25th November 2009)

These exercises built around the idea of allowing common film enthuse to try their hands on the procedures of making films, has been created on our regular activities where filmmaking takes on a conceptual level and with the concept implemented through very basic equipments. The idea is to allow participants to feel filmmaking as an artistic process where self reflection and dealing of the content is important letting free of the larger beliefs that films happen with better equipments alone.
These exercises will be held in Butwal, Bharatpur, Biratnagar, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Birgunj along with several events organised in Kathmandu. In Kathmandu such exercises will take on various schools, seminar halls and open gardens.( final calendar for this event up by 25th Nov. 2009)


f.    Artist discussion series

The artist discussion series refers to talk program that will be held at different locations with debut filmmakers giving a talk on their approach to cinema. These discussions should promote the idea of common individuals making films and shall allow sharing of structures that are completely genuine and independent to the fresh filmmakers. Artist discussion series will start November 2009 and shall target various colleges until February. Discussions will be followed with screenings of films made by the visiting filmmakers. Events also planned in Pokhara apart from Kathmandu. ( Final calendar by 25th nov. 2009)

The campaign is on a constant lookout of volunteers and interns. If you have a dedicated interest in cinema and think your participation can help us meet our goals, send us an email. We are looking for volunteers in Kathmandu, pokhara, Bharatpur, Bhairahawa, Dharan, Birgunj and in Nepalgunj.
